History of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church

A Church History involves giving detail information about how the church began. The definition of a Baptist Church is a company of  regenerated persons, immersed on profession of faith in Christ; united in covenant for worship, instruction, the observance of Christian ordinances, and for such service as the gospel requires; recognizing and accepting Christ as their supreme Lord and Lawgiver, and taking His word as their only and sufficient rule of faith and practice in all matters of conscience and religion, since they are saved by faith in Christ and baptized in His name, they are governed by His law, observing His ordinances and walking in fellowship with Him.

Matthew 16:18 says “And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

In the year 1889, the Lord directed the vision of 5 men to organize a church. Bro. Hal Kimbell, Bro Jerry Lewis, Bro. Charlie Thornton, Bro. Stephen Chappell, and Bro. W. M. Copeland. Bro. W.M. Copeland donated 2 acres of land for a school and church. Once the members were organized, then came the first building on this present site.

The church was established by Christ, the church was purchased by Christ, the church’s authority was given by Christ. The church’s leadership is given by God. Jeremiah 3:15 “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding”.

Eight very capable pastors has graced the pulpit of Mt. Zion MBC over the course of 100 plus years.

Our previous Pastor, Dr. W. F. Colen accepted the call of pastoring us in August of 1992. The church’s delegation of authority comes from the Pastor. Acts 6:3, says “Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over the business.”

The Lord has blessed Mt. Zion to have very capable deacons and trustees.

There have been years of  changes that we have implemented: youth ministry, a bus ministry, a witnessing program and several new members have been added to the church family. We have presently with us associate minister Rev. George Barnes, and Rev. Earnest Moore has been called to pastor Macedonia MBC, McNeil, and  Rev. Mario Moore lives in Fayetteville, AR.  Rev. Stevy Gardner, and Rev. W.C. Tims are honorary ministers here dedicated to the work of the Lord.
